The NIOA Newsletter - May Edition

Greetings to friends of the NIOA!

What goes up when the rain comes down? The answer is at the end of the newsletter!

  1. Annual Wastewater Challenge - Team Needed. We are continuing to look for 4 members to represent the NIOA team at the IWEA Operator's Challenge on May 23 - 24. Members do not have to be form the same utility, so if you are interested in participating, but don't have a full team, this is your opportunity! The Challenge will be held at the Clay Township Regional Waste District on the north side of Indianapolis. Please contact one of your NIOA officers if you are interested! The NIOA will pay all registration fees for the Challenge! More information on the Operator's Challenge can be found here. There will not be a May NIOA meeting because of the Operator's Challenge.
  2. WEFTEC Bus Trip? Kokosing is considering chartering a bus to go to WEFTEC - for NIOA members. They have asked the NIOA to poll members about their interest in participating. Tentatively, the bus will leave Ft. Wayne (maybe around 6am?) and make a number of stops between Ft. Wayne & Chicago to pick up members along the way, with the intention of arriving at the conference by 9am and returning after the exhibition hall closes at 5pm. Entrance to the exhibition hall is $50 for non-members ($75 after July 14th); WEF members can enter the exhibition hall for free. IF you would be interested in participating, please contact Mike Franke or Craig Williams no later than noon May 12! We are not looking for a firm commitment at this time, but just trying to understand the general interest among the membership so that Kokosing can decide if there is sufficient interest to proceed.
  3. NIOA Doug Brookhart Scholarship - Nominations Needed. We are also looking for nominees for the 1st official Doug Brookhart Scholarship!  As a tribute to Doug Brookhart, for his support for NIOA and his assistance in all aspects of the important work done by plant operators, a scholarship has been created. More information on the Doug Brookhart Scholarship can be found here
  4. Mark your calendar for the 10th Annual NIOA Golf Outing also being rebranded as the Pottyshack Invitational! This year's golf outing will be on June 14th at the Eberhart-Petro Municipal Golf Course in Mishawaka! This is a great opportunity for operators and businesses to get to know each other.  We will start the day off with the NIOA business/educational meeting at 10:00am - 1 technical CEU (WW) planned.  Those that have signed up to golf will be treated to a lunch followed by a round of golf beginning around 12:30 pm.  It will be a scramble consisting of a four man team. To RSVP, please send a completed RSVP form to Mike Franke. If your business is interested in sponsoring the Pottyshack Invitational, more information is available here
  5. Our annual cookout will be back at Potato Creek State Park on July 12th. Franke Environmental Systems and Engineering Resources will be providing a cornucopia of grilled meats. More details to come!
  6. Wastewater Certification Review Course. B.L. Anderson will be opening its doors on June 1 & June 8 for Barb Smith, who will be teaching Wastewater 101, an excellent resource for operators planning on taking the Municipal or Industrial Operator Certification Exam. Details can be found here.

Have a great week & stay dry!!!
